Adult and Children's Pottery Classes
Adult pottery class fees include everything you’ll need to turn lumps of clay into finished pieces: Students are welcome to use the studio whenever it is open, and are encouraged to practice frequently – one of the perks of classes at The Pot Shop!

2012 adult classes meet once a week for 8 weeks ($245). Class levels and times are further below.

A special holiday session meets for 6 weeks ($210).

Beginning and pre-intermediate pottery: Wheel throwing
(Pre-intermediate means you may have had some experience with pottery...but it’s been a long time and you’d like a refresher. You can switch classes if it’s appropriate.)

Demonstrations and discussions include clays and their classifications, basic firing and glazing techniques, and some aesthetics of form and design. Students will learn fundamental skills and become proficient in executing basic shapes such as cylinders, mugs, pitchers, and covered jars. Early intermediate students may also incorporate plates, larger bottles, vases, and bowls. If there’s something else you’d like to learn to make, just ask Dominic! Tools can be purchased at the first class.

Demonstrations and discussions include further exploration of form, design, and decorating techniques as well as glaze formulation and production pottery techniques. Students have the opportunity to experiment with new surface treatments such as underglazes, stains, and slips. Increased skill level allows students to create more advanced shapes such as platters, teapots, and casseroles. Shapes are geared toward individual style, with an emphasis on originality. Personalized instruction enhances creativity.

General Information
Adult classes run for 8 weeks and meet once a week for 3 hours. Class size is limited to 19 students so that each student has use of a wheel for the entire class period. Students are allowed and encouraged to sit in on other classes whenever a wheel is available.

Missed Sessions (Adult Classes Only)
Students are encouraged to attend every class during the 8-week course. A missed class may be made up by attending one of the other classes in session, as long as a wheel is available.

Studio Hours
Students have unlimited use of the studio and are encouraged to practice frequently.
Mon. - Fri. 11:00am-6:00pm (up to 10pm if there is a class that night)
Sat. 10:00am-5:00pm

Class Policies
Due to space limitations in the studio, all supplies must be removed from bins at the end of the class session. All pots must be removed from the studio within 30 days of the end of the session.


Children's classes - Let's play in clay!

Age 5-7: Hand building Children will have fun learning to manipulate clay and using it to express their ideas while mastering basic techniques. Hand building classes will cover pinch, coil, and slab hand building techniques as well as glazing.

Age 8-12: Wheel throwing These older children will learn beginning wheel skills such as centering, cylinders, and basic shapes. All clay, tools, and materials are provided for children's classes. Class size is limited to ten students. Make-up sessions are not available for children's classes.

School-year sessions meet once a week for 8 weeks ($140).
January 17 - March 13 (Tues. or Thurs., 4:30-5:30pm)
April 10 - May 28 (Tues. or Thurs., 4:30-5:30pm)
September 11 - October 30 (Tues. or Thurs., 4:30-5:30pm)

A special holiday session meets once a week for 6 weeks ($110).
November 6 - December 11 (Tues. or Thurs., 4:30-5:30pm)

Summer sessions meet twice a week for 4 weeks ($140).
June 12 - July 5 (Tues. and Thurs., 3-4pm or 4:30-5:30pm)
July 10 - August 2 (Tues. and Thurs., 3-4pm or 4:30-5:30pm)
